Fresh Food Markets in Melbourne

I love going to markets instead of supermarkets because it’s lively and colourful, and I can see local vendors in person. And discover new foods used by locals.

Here’s some info for you about three of the biggest markets in Melbourne.
Queen Victoria Market
Queen Victoria market is known for fresh and organic products. It is one of the major markets in Victoria. There are so many shops in the market which sell fresh vegetables, fruits and meat products. The market is open on all days except Mondays and Wednesdays. Many meat shops offer good deals on various types of fresh meat starting from sausages, pork, lamb, beef, goat, seafood – especially close to closing time, when amazing bargains are possible. There are plenty of shops which sell organic vegetables, fruits and yummy marinated meat. A tip: most vegetable shops just accept cash, so keep the cash handy while buying vegetables. Don’t forget to carry your own reusable bags as the market is plastic-free. It also has range of good lunch stalls, so if you get tired after shopping you can have a nice meal there. And don’t forget to check out delicious jam donuts truck.
Prahran Market
Prahran market is another one of the main markets in Melbourne which offers a brilliant range of fruits, vegetables, seafood and meat. The market is also known as ‘food lovers market’ by locals as it offers high quality products, from many different cultures. It is one of the oldest markets in Melbourne. Stalls sell tempting ranges of specialities like cheese, pasta, coffees plus fruits, vegetables, beef, pork, lamb, seafood, and poultry. You can also get advice and tips on which products to purchase from market traders. The market is open on all days except on Monday, and is just a tram ride from the CBD.
South Melbourne Market
This market has a colourful range of shops selling fresh organic vegetables and fruits, plus specialities of coffee, cheese, French pastries, dim sims, nuts, Italian treats, household goods, shoes, clothes, pet supplies, haircuts, it has everything! You can also enjoy delicious snacks and meals while shopping, as the market offers amazing international restaurants of various cuisines – I love the Turkish café, and the giant dish of Spanish paella bubbling away near the sidewalk. Locals hang out here as their favourite weekend place. It’s also just a tram ride away.

COFFEE CULTURE

Lygon street, or “little Italy” as the Melbournians call it, is a historic and cozy street located in the heart of Carlton. It’s a 20 minute walk from RMIT, and located just outside of the University of Melbourne, so it’s perfect for a quick coffee pick me up and scenic walk when you need a study break. If there’s one thing Italians and Melbournians have in common, it’s an affinity for a nice cup of coffee! Here are some of my favorites from one uni student on a budget to another…
University Café is one of the first espresso bars in Melbourne, so you can enjoy your coffee while feeling like a part of a long Melbournian history. For over 60 years the Italian family run café has been brewing hot coffee for uni’ students just like you. It’s the perfect place to bring your laptop and study if you wish, as there’s a quiet and peaceful ambience both indoors and outdoors.

D.O.C. Gastronomia Italiana
is perfect for bringing a few friends together to have a nice cup of warm coffee on a rainy Melbourne afternoon. The energy is fast-paced in the bustling café, so if you do need some alone time and you’re keen to people-watch, it’s a great place to sit and enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

Tiamo
seems to be a Melbourne favorite. It’s a popular spot, with lots of families and uni students alike enjoying some Italian pastries, or a warm cappuccino. The outdoor seating is perfect for some fresh air and a quick chat with some of your mates, with heaters and a nice view of a bustling Lygon street.

Aperitivo
is my personal favorite. They provide a sweet uni’ student discount for some
expensive tasting coffee. Just bring your student ID to knock off almost half the price on your regular cup of Joe. A large latté will cost you $3, compared to the regular $5! It closes around 3 pm, so it’s perfect for a midday pick me up.

STUDY HACKS TO GET THROUGH EXAM SEASON

Weeks leading up to exams can be very stressful. You’ve completed all your assignments, but now it’s time to get revising for those exams. I know this can be a very busy and stressful time, which is why I have collated a few study hacks to try and make studying a bit easier for you.
STUDY HACK 1: CREATE A TIMELINE
Creating a timeline is a good idea to plan out your exam schedule. This can be done in the weeks leading up to your exams. Knowing what your going to study each day will save you that time deciding where to start or even what subject to focus on. Additionally, you can create a day-to-day to-do list as it can be very rewarding by the end of the day when you can tick of those boxes. This can definitely help with productivity as we all know how satisfying it is to cross of items on the list.

STUDY HACK 2: WRITE UP YOUR NOTES
I know typing up your notes is a lot easier and time-efficient, but also writing your notes is a great way to learn the content and will boost those grades up a little bit higher. Even if you have typed your notes, writing down key summaries for each topic is going to help you with learning that content further. And don’t forget to use colours to make those notes seem a little less boring then they actually are.
STUDY HACK 3: CREATE A GOOD PLAYLIST
Having good music to listen to when studying can boost that productivity and may help take a bit of the stress away. Find music that makes you feel relaxed and pop that one whilst you study and believe me it will help get through that revision a lot easier. But careful not to spend too long finding the perfect playlist that you end up procrastinating further. My advice with this is to have a playlist ready beforehand the night before or in the morning before you get studying.

STUDY HACK 4: STAY ACTIVE
Staying active during exam season is a great way to help stay focused at your desk and remain productive. Getting a good workout in will help stimulate your brain and will decrease those stress levels. Doing a workout will also help get your mind off of all the work that you have to get through and is also a great study break. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to spend an hour or 2 at the gym, it can also be a small jog or a walk outside in the park. Along with this, remember to eat healthy meals during the day as well and you should be good to go.
STUDY HACK 5: GIVE YOURSELF REWARDS
Finally, don’t forget to give yourself a nice reward after a full day’s worth of studying. This can be things such as meeting a friend for coffee or having a nice dinner, even if that means ordering on uber eats. Also getting your favourite dessert is a great day to end the day. But also remember to take regular breaks during the day as well!
I know how hard it can be to even get started but remember that you got this and it will all be worth it in a couple of weeks. And soon it will all be over and you can enjoy a nice relaxing holiday
