Lygon street, or “little Italy” as the Melbournians call it, is a historic and cozy street located in the heart of Carlton. It’s a 20 minute walk from RMIT, and located just outside of the University of Melbourne, so it’s perfect for a quick coffee pick me up and scenic walk when you need a study break. If there’s one thing Italians and Melbournians have in common, it’s an affinity for a nice cup of coffee! Here are some of my favorites from one uni student on a budget to another…
University Café is one of the first espresso bars in Melbourne, so you can enjoy your coffee while feeling like a part of a long Melbournian history. For over 60 years the Italian family run café has been brewing hot coffee for uni’ students just like you. It’s the perfect place to bring your laptop and study if you wish, as there’s a quiet and peaceful ambience both indoors and outdoors.

D.O.C. Gastronomia Italiana
is perfect for bringing a few friends together to have a nice cup of warm coffee on a rainy Melbourne afternoon. The energy is fast-paced in the bustling café, so if you do need some alone time and you’re keen to people-watch, it’s a great place to sit and enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

Tiamo
seems to be a Melbourne favorite. It’s a popular spot, with lots of families and uni students alike enjoying some Italian pastries, or a warm cappuccino. The outdoor seating is perfect for some fresh air and a quick chat with some of your mates, with heaters and a nice view of a bustling Lygon street.

Aperitivo
is my personal favorite. They provide a sweet uni’ student discount for some
expensive tasting coffee. Just bring your student ID to knock off almost half the price on your regular cup of Joe. A large latté will cost you $3, compared to the regular $5! It closes around 3 pm, so it’s perfect for a midday pick me up.
